A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Eurovision Hair Consultations
The Moroccanoil backstage bubble was bursting with energy when the teams from Romania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Belgium, Czech Republic, and Ireland met with our expert stylists to discuss their final looks for their Eurovision 2022 performance. Find out how it all went down right here!
“Mi casa es su casa”
The Moroccanoil Styling Booth at Eurovision is “a space where the artists and performers can get pampered and feel at home,” says Moroccanoil Global Creative Director Antonio Corral Calero, who led the hair styling consultations together with expert stylists Sharon Dale, Franck Pérez, and Angelo Fraccica.

Team Ireland bounced into the booth
Brooke’s backup dancers are certainly not shy about making a statement onstage with their dance moves, and the same can be said for their hairstyles.

Big, fun, bouncy, and beautiful with plenty of movement is key, according to Antonio:
“We always watch the artists before we style them ahead of a performance like the Eurovision Song Contest.  The Irish show is fun and dynamic, so their look must reflect their performance, personality and the artist’s preferences.”

Antonio says it’s crucial to review the status of your performer’s hair before styling, particularly when working at an event as big as Eurovision.
“They’ve been performing, rehearsing, and attending a lot of press and Eurovision Pre Parties recently. It’s important to treat their hair with something like the Moroccanoil Hydrating Mask or Moroccanoil Treatment to create a healthy canvas that supports a beautiful and polished end result.”
Romania’s smooth style on stage
“Super slick and wet”.
That’s the look Romania’s Andrei (WRS) is going for when he performs on stage at the PalaOlimpico. Sharon recommends getting into the minds of the performers as much as possible during consultation.
“Andrei and his dancing team knew exactly what they wanted, so I asked for a selection of reference photos to understand their inspiration and to ensure we were on the same page.”

“His female backing dancers told us they will be working up a sweat during their performance, so we need to make sure their waves receive ample texture and hold to stay in place.”

It’s all in the details for Montenegro
Antonio described Vladana from Montenegro’s style as “kind of like the girl next door, but with a sophisticated twist.”
Developing a good understanding of a client’s personality and matching it with their intended look is a necessary skill for any backstage stylist.
“Creating a very soft ballerina-style textured bun, with soft frames around her face for an airy, effortless feel is perfect for her and her Eurovision 2022 song, ‘Breathe’”.

The Moroccanoil stylists will need to work hard to deliver this look for the stage, despite its easygoing vibe. According to Antonio, it’s all about the little details that make the final look pop.
“Prior to her show, we will apply our Restorative Hair Mask to seal her ends and create a healthy base. Then, we will blow dry and curl her hair to create a tight—but not too sleektop bun that has control and definition, secured with our Luminous Hairspray and finished with our Glimmer Shinethis will help the lights on stage to really capture the vitality of her hair.”

Belgium is going for bold
“I love this professionality.” – Jérémie Makiese.
When it comes to backstage consultations, Franck says you have to “go straight to the point. The Eurovision artists have a very short window of time between their makeup appointments, rehearsals and press requirements so it’s important that we are efficient and direct. Luckily, I also speak French which helpedthat’s the beauty of having an international stylist team at Eurovision”.
Belgium’s Jérémie also received the Moroccanoil Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo and Conditioner to fight brassiness and counteract unwanted yellow and orange tones between now and his performance.
Cohesiveness is key for North Macedonia
Sharon had the pleasure of styling Andrea’s hair for the Eurovision Pre Parties.
“I had already built rapport with Andrea and her management team,” says Sharon. This is an important part of the consultation process. You need to build trust with your performers to make space for a smooth, yet fun time in the styling chair.”

Andrea is opting to use a hair piece which the stylist team will need to “keep practicing until we get it right.” Sharon continued:
“You also have to read the room. Andrea was on a high from her last rehearsal, full of energy. So, I made sure I kept the consultation short, sharp, and bubblyyet still effectiveconversation. Although we need a lot of crucial information, we still need to make their experience lively, warm and welcoming.”

Czech Republic is sophisticated with an edge
We Are Domi completed the final backstage styling consultations with Moroccanoil led by Angelo. The dynamic trio all opted for different looks linked by an edgy twist.
“Not all artists arrive at the styling booth with a very clear idea. They sometimes rely on your expertise and guidance. You need to remain flexible too, adjusting to their mood and vibe on the dayas long as you keep cohesiveness amongst performers and constantly check in with them.”

Now that all the Eurovision performers have completed their hair consultations, the Moroccanoil stylists will be hard at work creating the final looks for the stage.
